Fitness Programs

This is probably the most common concern I hear from my new customers. With the excitement of starting a new fitness program and the desire to quickly change their lifestyle, many people are frustrated when they don’t lose weight, or even gain weight in the first week or two of their journey. This is common and there is a very good explanation for it. Our very own Beachbody trainer Chalene Johnson addressed this issue awhile ago. She does a wonderful job of explaining this situation and I thought I would share with you here. -Chad Why you sometimes gain weight when starting a new exercise program. by Chalene on December 2, 2009 Probably the most common question I get when I release a new exercise program is, “Help! I’m gaining weight! Am I doing something wrong?” This is a common phenomenon with any new exercise program, Turbo Kick, Turbo Jam, Hip Hop Hustle, you name it! It’s especially common (and temporary) with intense strength training programs like ChaLEAN Extreme or Tony Horton’s P90X. The motivation to start a new exercise program is almost always to lose weight. However, what most personal trainers know and most at-home exercisers do not, is that a new exercise program often can cause an immediate (and temporary) increase on the scale. (Notice I didn’t say weight gain! I’ll explain.) This common increase in the scale is also the reason why perhaps millions of people start and then quickly quit their resolution to get fit. The temporary weight gain explained: When someone starts a new exercise program, they often experience muscle soreness. The more intense and “unfamiliar” the program, the more intense the muscle soreness. This soreness is most prevalent 24 to 48 hours after each workout. In the first few weeks of a new program, soreness is the body trying to “protect and defend” the effected or targeted tissue. Exercise physiologists refer to this as delayed-onset muscle soreness, or DOMS. This type of soreness is thought to be caused by tissue breakdown or microscopic tears in muscle tissue. When this happens the body protects the tissue. The muscle becomes inflamed and slightly swollen with fluid retention. This temporary retention of fluid can result in a 3- to 4-pound weight gain within a few weeks of a new program. Keep in mind that muscle soreness is not necessarily a reflection of how hard you worked. In fact, some people feel no signs of muscle soreness, yet will experience the muscle protection mechanisms of water retention and slight swelling. Most people are motivated enough to put up with this temporary muscle soreness. Yet, many, especially those who really need immediate weight loss to keep them motivated in those first couple of weeks become discouraged and quit! When I worked with a group of 70 test participants during the development stages of ChaLEAN Extreme, this happened. Who was the most upset and discouraged? You guessed it… the women! I’m happy to report absolutely for every single woman (and [...]

I’ll be right up front with you, I can’t stand cooking. Luckily, my fiance is a great cook but there are still plenty of times where I am pressed into some kitchen action to help me meet my nutritional needs. Over the years I have learned many tricks to help culinary challenged people like myself create easy-to-make healthy meals and snacks. Without question Shakeology has become the easiest and healthiest of them all but this recipe for homemade protein bars is right up there too. 2 Cups of Quick Oats 2 Cups of Rolled Oats 1/4 Skim Milk 1/4 OJ 1/2 Cup of Organic Apple Sauce 3 Scoops of Whey Protein Powder (try different flavors) 1/2 Cup of Egg Whites 1/2 Cup of Sugar Free Maple Syrup Mix ingredients in a 9X9 pan and bake at 400 degrees for 20 mintues. Cut into 8 bars. Nutritional breakdown per bar (approx.): 240 calories, 4 grams of fat, 37 carbs, 6 grams of sugar and 15 grams of protein * For higher protein add another scoop of whey and another 1/4 cup of egg whites Please note: These bars are not meant as a substitute for the P90X Performance Bars as they have very few simple carbs. These bars are designed more as a mid-day snack or a supplement to a meal.
When Did We Become the Weirdos? I’m noticing a trend that seems to be gaining steam in our society. It seems that more and more people are calling us “weird” or referring to us as “health nuts” because we exercise regularly and actually care what we put into our bodies. Has our perception of “normal” when it comes to health and nutrition in this country become so skewed that those that pursue a healthy life are now considered freaks? If I turn down a donut, people often say to me “live a little”. No thanks, I would rather LIVE A LOT and that is why I make the choices I do. You have the donut, I’ll take an apple. You order the fried chicken, I’ll take mine grilled. You have a gigantic soda, I will have water or Shakeology. Call me a freak, a weirdo, a health nut, call me what you will, it just fuels me. I don’t eat a perfect diet. I’m not as ripped as Tony Horton. In fact, I might even be carrying a little extra body fat around my waist while you are reading this. You will never see me on the cover of a magazine. I eat plenty of foods I love and I enjoy a cold beer as much as the next guy. I do however, take caution to make sure that 90% of what I eat and drink is in the top two tiers of Michi’s Ladder because I love the way it feels to be healthy and full of energy! Why is it so hard for most of the population to grasp that? Maybe it’s insecurity or jealousy that causes people to say these things. Personally I think it is often because it is easier for these people to ridicule our discipline than to create their own. Who knows? What I do know is that if your “why” is big enough and means enough to you all the negative comments and eye rolling in the world will not deter you. My “why” is centered around living the rest of my life with vitality and a high level of energy and I know exercise and proper nutrition will allow me to do that. Let’s embrace our misFIT status and lead the way to end this awful trend of obesity and complacency ! Originally posted 2011-10-10 15:15:10. Republished by Blog Post Promoter

[wdgpo_plusone] P90X Tips I Wish I Knew When I Started. One of the most common things I am asked to do as a Team Beachbody Coach is offer P90X tips to those who are starting the program. When I started my journey with P90X and Beachbody, I had no idea that it would have such a huge impact on my life. Consequently, I made many mistakes when starting P90X. Please, learn at my expense. Do not make the same mistakes. Here are my P90X tips based on my experience and on what I didn’t do! 1. Watch the “How to Bring It” DVD. Committing to 90 days of P90X is not just a physical challenge but a mental one. This informational DVD will provide you with the answers to questions you don’t even have yet and most importantly, help you form the proper mindset to get in the best shape of your life. Get some P90X tips from the man himself, Tony Horton! 2. Read the P90X Fitness Guide The P90X fitness guide will layout in no uncertain terms what it will take to get maximum results out of the program. Plus it will answer many frequently asked questions about P90X including what to do after you finish your 90 day cycle. 3. Read the P90X Nutrition Guide It’s been said that up to 80% of your fitness progress comes from the kitchen. That is debatable, but the fact that fitness and nutrition work in concert to determine your success is not. The P90X nutrition guide not only tells you exactly what to eat, but equally as important, when to eat. Don’t worry, you don’t have to follow it meal for meal but you should follow the amount of calories, fat, protein and carbohydrates for each of three phases of the nutrition plan, as close as possible. 4. Take the Fit Test This is a must. The fit test will determine whether or not you meet the minimum fitness level to start P90X. In addition, completing the fit test will also give you a baseline to compare your results to. 5. Take Your Measurements Taking your measurements and doing it properly is another key to your success. The scale is NOT necessarily an accurate measuring tool of your success, especially in the beginning weeks. The tape measure is a much better tool to track your results. Be sure to read this post on how to take your body measurements. 6. Take Your “Before” Photos Taking photos of your body before you start your P90X (or another program) journey is very important. This is the one mistake I regret the most! I only took one picture and wish I had more angles. Your “before” photos can be very motivating as you push toward your goals! These same pictures become even more valuable when you take your “after” photos and compare the two sets. Be sure to check out this post on how to take your photographs. It’s vital that you do it correctly!
